A gravity purifier needs no electricity, no plumbing and no installation: you pour water into the top chamber and it trickles through a filter into the lower one. That makes it a practical choice for homes with long power cuts, weak water pressure, rented flats where drilling isn't allowed, or as a second unit. It suits treated city water that only needs cleaning up and protecting from germs, not salty borewell water.

We evaluated 30 gravity and non-electric purifiers on Amazon.in and shortlisted 6, comparing build material, candle type, running cost, spare availability, warranty and the most recent verified owner reviews. We dropped models whose recent owners report filters choking within weeks, 'stainless steel' bodies that rust, and listings with suspicious foreign-seeded ratings.

How We Rated These Products

Based on value and running cost, brand trust and service, purification for city water, build and reliability, and everyday ease of use

Scored out of 10
  • Value for Money 30%

The price shown on the Amazon.in product page plus running cost: replacement candle or kit prices and how easy they are to find.

  • Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 20%

A recognised brand, a real service network, spares availability and proven large-scale use. This category's biggest failure is after-sales, so it carries real weight.

  • Purification & Water Quality 20%

Clean, good-tasting water for municipal or low-TDS supply. Carbon plus germ-kill and ceramic plus carbon both qualify; a cleanable ceramic barrier is a modest plus.

  • Build, Storage & Reliability 20%

Body material (genuine 304 stainless steel above plastic), usable storage, and the most recent verified owner reviews for leaks and failures.

  • Ease of Use & Maintenance 10%

Rating Breakdown

Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 9.3

Our Verdict

The Pureit Classic isn't the most premium build here, but it's the easiest to live with: the lowest running cost, kits in every town, and the only real service network in the category. Most complaints are about units damaged in transit, so open and check it on delivery. For most city homes that need a non-electric purifier, this is the one to buy.

  • Small brand with courier-based support, not service centres
  • Slow 3 L/hr flow

Rating Breakdown

Value for Money 7.5
Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 6.0
Purification & Water Quality 8.5
Build, Storage & Reliability 9.2
Ease of Use & Maintenance 7.5

Our Verdict

If build quality and a proven recent record matter more than brand name, the RAMA 24L is the clear pick: genuine 304 steel, cleanable ceramic candles and the cleanest owner reviews in the list. It's slow and support is courier-based, so it suits patient households that want a purifier that lasts.

RAMA Gravity Water Filter 17L (8L Storage) 304 Stainless Steel, Ceramic Candles

  • 10-year body warranty

  • No nationwide service network

Rating Breakdown

Value for Money 7.8
Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 6.0
Purification & Water Quality 8.3
Build, Storage & Reliability 8.0
Ease of Use & Maintenance 7.5

Our Verdict

The RAMA 17L gives smaller households the same steel body and ceramic filtration as the 24L for about ₹1,500 less. Its recent reviews are less clean than its bigger sibling's, mostly because of the plastic tap, and its Amazon rating sits just under 4 stars.

RAMA Gravity Water Filter 32L (16L Storage) 304 Stainless Steel, Carbon Candles

The biggest RAMA, for large families, with thin recent review evidence.

Our Rating

6.7

Specifications

Brand RAMA

Body 304 stainless steel
Tap Plastic

Pros

  • The largest storage here (32 L total, 16 L purified)
  • 304 stainless steel with a 10-year body warranty
  • Fastest RAMA at 8 L/hr, thanks to four candles
  • Longest-lasting candles in the range (10,000 L)

Cons

  • The most expensive purifier here
  • Carbon candles only, with no ceramic barrier
  • Only 3 recent verified Indian reviews, the newest over a year old
  • 'NSF-certified' claim has no certificate number
  • The tallest and heaviest unit (67 cm)

Rating Breakdown

Value for Money 6.5
Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 5.5
Purification & Water Quality 7.5
Build, Storage & Reliability 7.0
Ease of Use & Maintenance 7.8

Our Verdict

The 32L is the RAMA for big families, with the most storage and the fastest flow in the range. It uses carbon candles rather than ceramic, and its recent review trail is thin, so treat its high lifetime rating with some caution.

ZeroB Suraksha Lite 10L Gravity Water Purifier (Exsil Nano)

A trusted brand's newest gravity purifier: fast and cheap, but unproven so far.

Our Rating

6.6

Specifications

Brand ZeroB (Ion Exchange)

Total / Purified Storage 10 L / 5 L

Replacement Related ZeroB cartridge about ₹780
Certification Claims NSF-certified technology (no certificate number shown)
Warranty Not published

Pros

  • Fastest claimed flow here
  • Cheapest to buy
  • Washable filter dome
  • Ion Exchange is a long-established Indian water brand
  • See-through chambers

Cons

  • No Amazon ratings or Indian reviews yet
  • Shortest cartridge life here (about 1,650 L), so running costs add up
  • Smallest storage (5 L purified)
  • 'NSF-certified' claim has no certificate number
  • No warranty term published

Rating Breakdown

Value for Money 6.0
Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 6.5
Purification & Water Quality 7.2
Build, Storage & Reliability 6.0
Ease of Use & Maintenance 8.3

Our Verdict

On paper the Suraksha Lite is an attractive budget option from a reputable brand, with a fast claimed flow and the lowest price. It has no Amazon ratings yet and a short cartridge life, so you'd be an early adopter. Choose the Pureit Classic if you want the proven option at a similar price.

Aquaguard Amrit 4000 Non-Electric Water Purifier 15L

A big brand at a small price, with the weakest warranty here.

Our Rating

6.5

Specifications

Brand Aquaguard (Eureka Forbes)
Filter Activated carbon
Stages 4 (particulate, sediment, carbon, active charge)
Total / Purified Storage 15 L / 7 L
Body Polypropylene
Flow Rate 18 L/hr
Cartridge Life 4,000 L
Warranty 6 months

Pros

  • Well-known national brand
  • Low price at ₹2,499
  • Fast 18 L/hr flow and light at 2.6 kg
  • Auto shut-off when the cartridge expires

Cons

  • The shortest warranty here, just 6 months
  • One owner couldn't find a replacement cartridge for this exact model
  • 24% of recent reviews are negative, including real failures and unanswered support
  • Plain carbon filtration only
  • Amazon rating below 4 stars

Rating Breakdown

Value for Money 5.8
Brand Trust & After-Sales Support 7.0
Purification & Water Quality 7.0
Build, Storage & Reliability 6.0
Ease of Use & Maintenance 8.0

Our Verdict

The Amrit 4000 carries a trusted name at a low price, but its 6-month warranty, patchy recent reviews and a reported cartridge-availability problem make it the most cautious pick here. At the same price, the Pureit Classic is the safer buy.

Buying Guide

What a gravity purifier can and can't do

A gravity purifier removes sediment, improves taste and smell with activated carbon and, with a ceramic candle, adds a barrier against bacteria and cysts. It does not lower TDS and doesn't reliably remove viruses or dissolved metals, so ignore listings that claim otherwise. Use one only on municipal or low-TDS water; for borewell or salty water you need an RO purifier. Not sure which your water needs? Our water purifier buying guide works it out in three questions.

Buy a brand you can get serviced

The biggest cause of unhappy owners in this category is after-sales: a leaking tap, a choked filter and nobody answering. A household brand with spares in every town, like Pureit, takes most of that risk away. A well-built small brand can be excellent, but you may be on your own if something goes wrong. A big logo isn't a guarantee either: Aquaguard's Amrit 4000 has only a 6-month warranty.

Carbon plus germ-kill vs ceramic candle

For city water, both approaches deliver clean, good-tasting water. Pureit's carbon plus germ-kill system is proven at scale and cheap to run. A ceramic candle, like RAMA's, adds a physical filter you can scrub clean when the flow slows, which is a real plus but not a reason to overlook a trusted, cheaper unit. Sealed UF cartridges on some other models can't be cleaned and often slow down within weeks, per owner reviews.

If you want steel, insist on genuine 304

A real 304 stainless steel body lasts for years and usually comes with a 10-year warranty. Cheaper 'stainless' units in this category have rusted within weeks, according to buyers. If a steel model shows repeated rust complaints, walk away. Food-grade plastic is fine for a budget or second unit.

Halve the headline capacity

The advertised litres are the two chambers combined; the purified water you can pour is roughly half. Plan for about 8 L purified for 1-2 people, 12 L for a family of 4-5 and 16 L for a large family.

Check flow, tap and auto shut-off, and test on day one

Slow flow is the most common long-term complaint. Plastic taps leak more often than steel ones in owner reviews, and units without an auto shut-off can overflow. Open and check any unit the day it arrives, since damaged-in-transit reports are common across every brand.

Treat certification claims with care

Two listings here, the RAMA 32L and the ZeroB Suraksha Lite, say 'NSF-certified' without a certificate or registration number you can check. No gravity purifier in this list shows a verifiable WHO, NSF or BIS mark for its germ-removal claim, so buy on brand trust, build and owner reviews instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gravity water purifier should most people buy?
For most homes on municipal water, the Pureit Classic 23L at ₹2,999: it's from a brand you can get serviced almost anywhere, thousands buy it every month, and its kits are cheap. If you want the best build and a ceramic filter, the stainless steel RAMA 24L is the quality pick.
Do gravity purifiers reduce TDS?
No. Owners consistently report the TDS reading doesn't change. If you need to lower TDS or treat borewell water, you need an electric RO purifier.
Should I buy a gravity purifier or an electric UV purifier?
Both suit low-TDS city water. A gravity purifier needs no power or installation, while an electric UV purifier is faster, kills viruses more reliably and works on demand. If you have steady power and a running tap, UV is the more convenient choice. Our water purifier buying guide helps you decide in three questions.
Is Pureit's carbon plus germ-kill as good as RAMA's ceramic candle?
For municipal water, both are adequate. Pureit's system is proven by millions of users; RAMA's ceramic candle adds a physical, cleanable barrier. Neither reduces TDS. We rank Pureit first on trust, price and service reach, and RAMA narrowly leads on filtration.
Why isn't the KENT Gold series here?
Recent verified reviews for the KENT Gold, Gold Plus, Gold Star and Gold Optima show 50-70% negative feedback, mostly about water slowing to a trickle within weeks. A healthy lifetime rating hides this, which is why we weigh the most recent buyers most heavily.
How much purified water does a '23L' unit hold?
About half. The headline figure is both chambers combined, so a 23L Pureit holds about 9-10 L of purified water at a time and a 24L RAMA about 12 L.
How often do I replace the candle or kit?
A ceramic candle lasts around 6,000 L and can be cleaned in between, a carbon candle around 10,000 L, and Pureit's germ-kill kits are swapped periodically. Check that the replacement for your exact model is in stock before buying.
The water smells of chlorine at first. Is the filter faulty?
Usually not. Several Pureit and RAMA owners notice a chlorine smell in the first few days that fades as the carbon settles. If it persists after a week, clean or soak the candles as the manual describes.

Our Verdict

For most city homes that need a non-electric purifier, the Pureit Classic 23L at ₹2,999 is the one to buy. It has the lowest running cost, kits in every town and the only real service network in this category.

If you'd rather pay once for something built to last, the RAMA 24L at ₹7,189 has a genuine 304 steel body, cleanable ceramic candles and the cleanest owner record here. Smaller households can get the same filtration in the RAMA 17L at ₹5,642.

The ZeroB Suraksha Lite at ₹1,960 is the cheapest to buy but has no reviews yet and a short cartridge life, so the Pureit Classic remains the safer budget choice.
