You can't tell solid copper from a copper-plated fake in a product photo — the giveaways only show once the bottle is in your hands. The trick is to verify it fast, inside your return window, without doing anything that would mark a genuine bottle or stop you sending a fake back. So run the return-safe checks (1–3) the moment it arrives — they take seconds and leave no trace. Test 4 is a gentle, reversible confirmation. Tests 5 and 6 either mark the bottle or take weeks to show, so save them for a bottle you've already decided to keep — or one you already suspect is fake and want proof to return.    How: The moment it arrives, look down the mouth of the bottle in good light. Genuine copper is the same warm reddish colour inside as out. A silver, grey or white interior means it's tin-lined or a steel/base metal underneath.

   Why: This is the single most telling check and it leaves no mark, so do it first. It also doubles as the health test: the Ayurvedic benefit only works when water sits in direct contact with bare copper, so any lining defeats the purpose.^[2] A lined or lacquered inside is either a fake or useless for copper-charged water.

   How: Hold it in natural light. Pure copper is a warm, reddish-orange — like a new penny. A yellowish, brassy gold tone points to a copper-zinc alloy (brass); an unnaturally pale or silvery sheen suggests a plated base metal.

   Why: Copper's warm red tone is hard to fake convincingly — the more it drifts toward yellow-gold, the more zinc and the less copper. Instant and non-marking, but lighting and polish can shift the shade, so treat colour as a supporting clue, not a verdict.

   The magnet test — useful, but don't trust it alone

   How: Hold a fridge magnet to the body. Copper is non-magnetic, so a magnet that grabs and sticks means there's an iron or steel core — definitely not pure copper.

   Why: This is the most over-hyped copper test, because it only works one way. A magnet sticking rules a bottle out; a magnet NOT sticking proves almost nothing, since brass, bronze, aluminium and stainless steel are all non-magnetic too. Harmless to run, but treat "the magnet didn't stick" as necessary, never sufficient.

   How: On an out-of-sight spot like the base, rub gently with fresh lemon dipped in a little salt, leave it no more than about 30 seconds, then wipe and rinse. Real copper brightens to a pinkish-orange shine as the acid lifts the surface film; a coated or fake surface barely changes.

   Why: Mild citric acid reacts with copper oxide but does nothing to lacquer or a steel core — and it's exactly how you clean copper, so the brightened patch buffs back and evens out with use, keeping the bottle returnable. Keep it gentle and hidden, though: never scrub hard or use steel wool (that leaves permanent scratches), and skip it on a painted or lacquered exterior.

   Scratch a hidden spot — conclusive, but permanent

   How: With a coin or key, scratch a discreet area — the base, or the inside of the cap rim. Solid copper stays the same reddish colour right through; if a silver or white metal peeks out, it's copper-plated.

   Why: Plating is only microns thick, so a scratch cuts straight through to the base metal it hides — the most conclusive test there is. But it's permanent, so don't use it as a first check: reach for it only once you've decided to keep the bottle, or when the return-safe checks already make you suspect a fake and you want proof to send it back.

   How: Fill it and use it normally. Genuine bare copper darkens, spots and eventually greens within weeks. A bottle that stays mirror-shiny for months, untouched, has a lacquer coating — or isn't copper.

   Why: Oxidation is copper's natural chemistry, so — counter-intuitively — tarnishing is proof of authenticity, not a defect, and the green film (verdigris) confirms real copper (just clean it off before drinking).^[4] But it takes weeks, well beyond most return windows, and a tarnished bottle can't go back as new — so it's reassurance after you've committed, not a return-window test.

Feel, sound and price are weaker clues, but they're instant and leave no mark, so they're free to check on day one. Copper is dense, so a genuine bottle feels substantial in the hand and gives a duller, more resonant knock than tinny thin steel. Don't lean on the listed weight, though — it usually includes the packaging and can't prove purity anyway, because wall thickness matters more than the metal (a thin real-copper bottle can weigh less than a thick-walled plated one) and brass and bronze are nearly as dense as copper.
