So we approached this differently. We analysed ten insulated bottles on two things that can actually be verified: whether they carry ISI certification against IS 17526 — the Bureau of Indian Standards specification that mandates a real, measured retention test — and what recent verified Indian buyers reported after living with them. We read the last 100 verified India reviews for each bottle where that many existed, and scored what those buyers described rather than what the brand promised.

What "ISI Certified" Actually Tests on a Vacuum Flask

For a steel vacuum flask the ISI mark is granted against IS 17526:2021, Domestic Stainless Steel Vacuum Flask / Bottle — Specification.[1] That matters because the standard does not accept a printed claim — it mandates a measured test. Clause 7.4 fills the bottle with water at 95°C and requires the temperature to still be above set thresholds at 1, 6, 12 and 24 hours. Clause 7.5 fills it with water at 5°C and checks it again after 6 hours. Clause 7.6 goes further and requires the flask to still meet those retention figures after drop and pendulum impact tests. Four of the ten bottles here publish the certification in their specifications: Milton Artedge, Pexpo Oslo, Perch Apex and Milton Elfin. Milton's Duo DLX claims the mark in its feature bullets but not in its specification table. Where a listing is silent, treat it as unverified rather than as failing — absence of the mark is absence of evidence, not proof of a bad bottle.

What "Keeps Drinks Hot for 24 Hours" Legally Means

Almost every listing in this category advertises 24 hours hot. Under IS 17526 that phrase has a specific and much less impressive meaning. For a 751–1000 ml flask with a narrow mouth, the standard requires at least 91°C after 1 hour, 80°C after 6 hours, 70°C after 12 hours and just 55°C after 24 hours. For a wide-mouth flask of the same size the 24-hour floor drops to 42°C — barely above body temperature. There is a second catch: clause 7.4.1 specifies that routine production testing covers only the 1, 6 and 12-hour marks, and the 24-hour figure is a type test rather than something checked on regular production units. So when a bottle promises 24 hours hot, read it as "still drinkably warm the next morning", not "still hot".[1]

How Long These Really Keep Water Cold

Cold retention is tested far less rigorously than heat. IS 17526 clause 7.5 requires only a single measurement at 6 hours: a 751–1000 ml narrow-mouth flask filled with water at 5°C must still be at or below 10°C six hours later, and 11°C for a wide mouth.[1] There is no 24-hour cold requirement in the standard at all, even though most listings advertise "24 hours cold". In practice, cold holds longer than heat in the same bottle because the gap between 5°C water and a 35–45°C Indian summer day is smaller than the gap between 95°C water and that same day. The owner reports we read reflect that: complaints about failing cold retention are much rarer than complaints about tea going lukewarm. If cold is your priority, the physics is on your side — but fill the bottle to the top, since a half-empty flask holds a large volume of warm air.

The Failure That Actually Matters: Insulation That Stops Working

The most useful thing we found in the review data is not how long a new bottle holds temperature, but how many stop holding it at all. Among the flasks we excluded, "no heat retention after one to two months" was one of the single most repeated complaints — it appears across Cello Duro Kent, Milton Glassy 1000 and Borosil Hydra Bolt. That is a vacuum seal failing, not a bottle that was never good. When you receive a new bottle, fill it with boiling water, seal it and check the outer wall after ten minutes. If the outside is warm, the vacuum is compromised and it should go straight back.

Capacity: 740 ml, 850 ml or a Full Litre?

Six of the ten bottles here are 1000 ml or close to it, and for most office and school use that is the right answer — it covers a working day without a refill.
